Famous LDS People: Musicians

Liriel
You may have seen Liriel Domiciano singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir recently, but did you know she is a well-known pop star in her home country of Brazil? Liriel's rise to fame began when she was looking for a job as a seamstress. She went to a bridal fashion show in hopes of getting a job, but while she was there, she heard someone singing to get wedding "gigs." Liriel decided to sing for the people there too, and she was immediately surrounded by people wanting her to sing at their weddings. Soon thereafter, a friend told her to try out for Brazil's version of "American Idol," and she did so. She and her male singing partner eventually won the competition. This publicity helped them acheive immediate success, and they sold millions of records within a few months' time.

The Domiciano family have worked hard to get where they are now. When Liriel was younger, she and her three sisters helped their home, making each brick out of concrete and stacking them by hand. This took many months because the family had very little money to buy the materials to build their house.

While Liriel was performing on that first T.V. show, the family couldn't afford to buy her clothes, so she and her mother made her dresses--and made them modest! Liriel still sticks to her modesty standards, though others may try to pressure her into wearing less-ideal clothing. She says that recently she prayed that the person "who was harassing me would understand my way of dressing." And amazingly, the people who had been pressuring her stop doing so the very next day. Says Liriel, "In those moments, I cry out to the Lord to surround me with his arms and protect me. The Lord has always answered my prayers."

When Liriel isn't allowed to talk about her faith on T.V., she wears her Young Women's medallion as an outward sign of her beliefs and standards. She says "I earned every award from Beehive to Laurel . . . . Regardless of your age, when you look at the medallion you have earned, you will reflect on how it has blessed your life." And now millions of others are seeing those blessings reflected in Liriel's life.
