Famous LDS People: Athletes

Dale Murphy - National League All-star, Baseball
Dale joined the Church while playing ball for the Atlanta Braves. A teammate of his--Barry Bonnell--was reading a book during a bus trip (The Book of Mormon), and Dale and Barry got into a discussion about the Church. The discussion lasted for eight hours! Well, Dale did join the Church and was married in the temple.

He says of his wife, "I remembered the feeling I had when I prayed about the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. It was a very strong feeling, like a burning within me. As I got to know Nancy better, it kept getting stronger and stronger, telling me that she was definitely the right one."

Murphy won a Golden Glove, MVP, and became the fifth-highest paid player in baseball history. He credits his dad’s advice for guiding him to such success. His dad would say, "Dare to be good." Murphy lived that motto by "giving extra effort, taking risks, and daring to be the best ballplayer he could be."

Murphy has since worked hard as a member of the Church, serving in many capacities, including as a Mission President for the ? Mission. He says "I find that when I go to my Heavenly Father for guidance, he helps me make the right decisions to keep my life in balance." He urges, "If you live what you believe, you will always have the respect of others."
