Gordon B. Hinckley, Prophet and President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Gordon B. Hinckley lives by some wonderful mottos. One of them is to "pray as if everything depends on the
Lord, and then get off your knees and work as if everything depends on you." His life has shown that kind of
faith and hard work.
In 1981, President Hinckley was called to serve as an additional counselor in the First Presidency of the Church.
All the members of the First Presidency were experiencing health problems, and much of the Church's responsibility
rested on him. He says, "That was a very heavy and overwhelming responsibility. It was an almost terrifying load
at times. Of course, I consulted with our brethren of the twelve. I recall on one particular occasion getting on
my knees before the Lord and asking for help in the midst of that very difficult situation. And there came into
my mind those reassuring words, 'Be still and know that I am God' (D&C 101:16). I knew again that this was His
work, that He would not let it fail, that all I had to do was work at it and do my very best, and that the work
would move forward without letup or hindrance of any kind."
He says, "Attitude has more to do with personality, with attractiveness, with getting along with others than does any other attribute."
